Clare studied singing, piano, composition and music history at the Newcastle College of Music. Major awards from The Esther Gartner Trust, The Gardner's Trust and South East Arts enabled her to continue her studies. Consequently, she received regular singing lessons, for over twenty years, from international baritone Brian Rayner Cook. In 1990, Clare was awarded the runner's up place in the Frink "Woman of the Year Award" and she has received a bursary to attend Dartington International Summer School. A leading member of Path Productions, Clare played a major part when the company won the "Brighten Up London" award from LBC Radio.
